nRF5340 Prototyping Platform – Thingy:53
By Nordic Semiconductor ASA
The Nordic Thingy:53 is an easy-to-use IoT prototyping platform suitable for Matter development. The Thingy:53 is built around the nRF5340 SoC which is the world’s first wireless SoC with two Arm Cortex-M33 processors. The combination of two flexible processors, the advanced feature set, and an operating temperature up to 105 °C, makes it the ideal choice for Matter, LE Audio, professional lighting, advanced wearables, and other complex IoT applications.
The Thingy:53 also includes many different integrated sensors, like environmental-, and color and light sensors, accelerometers, and a magnetometer, which all can be taken advantage of without additional hardware. It is powered by a rechargeable Li-Po battery with a 1350 mAh capacity that can be charged via USB-C. There is also an external 4-pin JST connector compatible with the Stemma/Qwiic/Grove standards for hardware accessories.
The firmware of the Thingy:53 is built on top of the nRF Connect SDK which is the software development kit for the Nordic Semiconductor SoCs for Matter. It offers a complete solution that integrates the Zephyr RTOS, protocol stacks like Matter SDK, reference applications and hardware drivers.
The certified Matter weather station application demonstrates the usage of the Matter application layer to build a weather station device using the Nordic Thingy:53. Such a device lets you remotely gather different kinds of data using the device sensors, such as temperature, air pressure, and relative humidity. The device works as a Matter accessory device, meaning it can be paired and controlled remotely over a Matter network built on top of a low-power, 802.15.4 Thread network.
